I signed up for Social Security back in September on line. A nice lady called me the next day and told me I did not have to come down to the office and bring them my birth certificate, that I was already in the system - Cool!
She explained that you don't get a check until one month after your birthday and that my check would arrive in my bank on the second week of the month - Cool!
It's the second week. I checked with the bank and the lady told me that the checks usually are posted at midnight on Wednesday. - Cool!
It's Thursday, I check the bank account - no SS money. I call SS. The woman on the phone tells me I won't get a check until February. I tell her I signed up in September and the lady said I would get a check in January. Sorry, she can't help me, call the local office and get an appointment.
I should have known that it was TOO easy! Gotta go call the local SS office.
UPDATE: Wouldn't you know it - today the local office put a new phone system on line. The result was that I finally clicked through all the new gobbledy gook - Try our online site at SocialSecurity.gov, etc. (Geez, I would but the cable internet is down!) Finally get to the waiting for an agent and listening to the elevator music....do that for about 20 minutes and then it sounds like someone is picking up BUT, oh, no! They cut me off!
Dial again, go through all that again, get to the elevator music and wait 34 minutes until I finally get someone. That someone explains that I won't get this months check until next month. So, when it comes time for you to start drawing SS, remember this: It'll be two months AFTER your birthday month before you see anything.
